What is hospice care?
Many people think hospice is a place. Hospice is not a place. Hospice is care that comforts and supports patients and their families when a life-limiting illness no longer responds to cure-oriented treatments. VITAS Innovative Hospice Care of Cincinnati provides hospice care wherever the patient calls home: his or her own home or apartment, nursing home, assisted living community, etc.
The goal of VITAS hospice care in Cincinnati
Hospice care treats symptoms, not causes, of terminal illness for people in their last months, weeks and days of life. The goal of hospice care is not to cure, but to make the most of the time that remains.
Hospice care is provided by remarkable teams of professionals specially trained to care for terminally ill patients. VITAS physicians, nurses, social workers, chaplains, bereavement specialists, nurses’ aides and even volunteers make up our Cincinnati hospice care teams. They help control pain and discomfort. They help the families and loved ones of VITAS’ Cincinnati hospice patients cope with the emotional, social and spiritual aspects of death and dying.
Who pays for Cincinnati hospice care?
As unique as hospice care is, it is not expensive. Because hospice care is a Medicare benefit, all Medicare/Medicaid beneficiaries are 100 percent covered. Most private insurance plans also cover hospice care. VITAS will work with you or your insurance provider to address any hospice costs. There is no need to defer hospice care due to financial concerns.
